UEFA’s Best Women’s Player in Europe was launched in 2013 as an initiative of UEFA in partnership with ESM.
The accolade recognises the best player appearing for a club within the territory of a UEFA member association during the previous season, irrespective of her nationality. Players are judged by their performances in all competitions, at both domestic and international level.
An initial shortlist of 10 players is drawn up by the head coaches of the leading national teams (either the finalists of the UEFA Women’s EURO tournament or the European qualifiers for the relevant FIFA Women’s World Cup) as well as the head coaches of the clubs that reached the quarter-finals of the previous season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.
A panel of 20 expert journalists, chosen by the European Sports Media (ESM) group, then decides on a final shortlist of three candidates.
