THE VITAL ROLE OF THE WRITTEN PRESS

At a time when the expression 'media' has too often become synonymous with television, it is more important than ever to remember which sector of the media was the first to give football its wholehearted promotional support. Of course, in the days when many ESM members were founded, they did not face competition from the electronic media. But today, the print media - and especially that sector which specialises in sport or, more specifically, football – still has a vital role to play that is complementary to that of television, rather than directly competitive. The media landscape in the 21st century will continue to require the expert analysis and authoritative commentary which the press offers as an important supplement to the immediacy of TV football coverage. And fortunately for all of us, the public’s appetite for such service shows no sign of abating. Furthermore, we sense a growing demand for serious and quality information in sports journalism. The magazines, working together under the flag of ESM, are resolved to follow football with a critical but honest and open mind.
